Allium caeruleum (Azure Allium) - Sky-Blue Globes for Summer Borders

Allium caeruleum, also known as Azure Allium or Allium azureum, produces extraordinary spheres of vivid blue, star-shaped flowers on slender upright stems in late spring and early summer.

A beautiful species Allium for sunny borders, gravel gardens and naturalistic planting, its many small flowers can provide useful additional forage for visiting insects. Plant amongst grasses and perennials for blue flowerheads that appear to float above the surrounding planting.

Joel says…
“Blue is such a useful colour in naturalistic planting, and this Allium is particularly striking. I’d plant it in loose groups through grasses and other perennials rather than as a formal block - and give it plenty of sun and good drainage.”

Additional Info

Few bulbs produce a blue quite like Allium caeruleum. Also widely known as Allium azureum or Azure Allium, this striking ornamental onion sends up slender stems topped with compact spheres of small, star-shaped flowers in an intense sky to azure blue.

Flowering in late spring to early summer, the globes appear to float above surrounding planting, making this a particularly effective Allium for naturalistic borders, gravel gardens and sunny wildlife-friendly planting. It works beautifully threaded amongst grasses and other perennials rather than planted as an isolated specimen.

Native from eastern Europe through Central Asia to Xinjiang, Allium caeruleum is naturally associated with temperate landscapes including dry slopes, plains and steppe-like habitats. It is a true species rather than a modern garden cultivar.

Wildlife value

Each blue globe is actually made up of numerous small individual flowers, creating multiple accessible feeding points for visiting insects.

Although not native to Britain, Allium caeruleum can therefore make a useful addition to wildlife-friendly planting, providing additional floral forage around late spring and early summer while bringing an unusual colour into mixed borders.

We regard plants such as this as supplementary forage rather than substitutes for native plants with their more complex ecological relationships.

Planting & care

Position: Full sun
Soil: Free-draining soil; avoid persistently wet or waterlogged ground
Planting depth: Approximately 8-10cm deep
Spacing: Approximately 8-10cm apart for a naturalistic display
Height: Usually around 30-60cm
Flowering: Late spring to early summer, typically May-June
Aftercare: Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering so the bulb can replenish its reserves for the following year.

For the most natural effect, plant in loose groups or drifts amongst grasses and lower-growing perennials. Given suitable sunny, well-drained conditions, plants can gradually form colonies over time. Missouri Botanical Garden records it as suitable for naturalising and notes that established plants have good drought tolerance.

What's in a name?

You'll frequently find this bulb sold as Allium azureum, but current botanical treatment by Kew accepts Allium caeruleum as the species name and lists A. azureum as a synonym.

The name is particularly appropriate: caeruleum refers to its remarkable blue colouring - something genuinely unusual amongst ornamental Alliums.

SAFETY NOTE

Ornamental Alliums are members of the onion family. Bulbs are not intended for consumption and should be planted and handled as ornamental garden plants. Allium species can also be harmful to dogs and cats if eaten in quantity, so keep bulbs and plant material away from pets likely to chew or ingest them.

Why Wild Your Garden?

We carefully select bulbs that earn their place in a wildlife-friendly garden - prioritising native and naturalised species where ecological relationships matter most, alongside carefully chosen ornamentals that provide useful additional forage.

Orders are hand-picked for quality and packed in paper wherever suitable, with breathable net packaging used where necessary to keep bulbs in the best possible condition.

We work with specialist bulb growers and suppliers, including long-established local growers.
