Additional Info

A jewel-box bugle forming tight, non-runnering rosettes of deep bronze, crisply crinkled leaves that shine even in low light. In spring to early summer it sends up short, chunky spires of blue-violet flowers - precise, tidy and brilliant at the pond collar/woodland edge (it’s not aquatic). Unlike spreading Ajuga reptans, this is a slow, clump-forming selection that stays put in small spaces, rock crevices and between paving. Foliage typically 5-8 cm tall; 10-15 cm in flower.
Native status: Cultivar of a UK native (A. pyramidalis occurs naturally but is scarce/upland); garden-safe.

Where it thrives
Light: Partial shade to shade (morning or dappled sun ok)
Moisture/Zone: Pond collar / damp border / woodland edge; moist but well-drained mineral loam; do not submerge
Setting: Front-of-rim edger, path joints, rockery pockets, basket rims on dry land, between ferns/hostas/sedges

Planting & care

  • Plant into peat-free loam improved with leaf-mould; keep evenly moist while establishing

  • Mulch lightly each spring to hold moisture; avoid waterlogging

  • Shear after flowering to refresh the bronze carpet and encourage new leaves

  • Divide every 2-3 years (spring/autumn) to thicken patches or share; avoids crowding

  • No pesticides; avoid high-salt feeds

Safety (important & honest):
Ornamental use only - do not ingest. Generally low-risk to handle. Keep plant material and soil out of natural watercourses.

Truth-first wildlife note:
Blue blooms offer useful early nectar for small bees and hoverflies; the tight foliage provides low cover at the warm rim for amphibians and invertebrates. For a longer nectar season, pair with natives like Water Mint, Marsh Marigold and Purple Loosestrife nearby.

Joel says…
“Think miniature bugle with bronze armour - stays neat, flowers blue, and doesn’t run. Give it moist shade and a light clip after bloom for a year-round, glossy mat.”
